Alumni Spotlight – Dan Kantrovitz ’01
A four-year member of the Brown baseball team, Dan Kantrovitz ’01 was a two-time First Team All-Ivy selection at shortstop, and currently ranks third all-time in program history with 208 career hits. He also ranks sixth in doubles (47) and games played (174), and 10th in RBIs (111) and runs scored (127).Â
After graduating from Brown with a concentration in organizational behavior and management, Kantrovitz was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2001 MLB Draft. A shoulder injury limited his time in the minors and, following a stint in the business, world, Kantorvitz moved back into baseball and was hired as an assistant in the Cardinals’ scouting department. After just four years he became the Assistant Scouting Director and the Director of College Scouting, a position he held from 2004-08 before he received a master's degree in statistics from Harvard in 2009.
From 2009-11, Kantrovitz worked with the Oakland Athletics, where he dealt with international operations and baseball operations analysis as the Head of International Scouting. He aided analytical projects and led the international scouting operations, working with Sam Geaney, Farhan Zaidi, Billy Owens, David Forst and Billy Beane. In the end, the team created an international scouting operation to cover practically every corner of the world where there was competitive baseball.
The St. Louis native then returned to the Cardinals and served as the Director of Scouting from 2012-14. Kantrovitz proved instrumental to the team, landing pitchers Michael Wacha and Marco Gonzales.Â
In November of 2014, Kantrovitz returned to the Oakland A’s as the Assistant General Manager, a position he currently holds. In this role, Kantrovitz is involved in various aspects of baseball operations with the team, including overseeing statistical analysis for evaluating and targeting players in the amateur draft, free agent and trade markets.Â
