The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University and the Brown University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce The Royce Fellowship for Sport and Society.

Royce Fellowship for Sport and Society
“Sport can play a role in improving the lives of individuals, not only individuals…but whole communities. I am convinced that the time is right to build on that understanding, to encourage governments, development agencies and communities to think how sport can be included more systemically in the plans to help children, particularly those living in the midst of poverty, disease and conflict.” Kofi A. Awarded from 2007-18, the Royce Sport and Society Fellowship recognizes Brown University undergraduates who have a record of excellence in academics and sport, supporting these student-athletes to embark on innovative research or applied projects, and explore the intersection of sport and human rights within a particular context.

Fellows’ areas of research may include health, education, conflict resolution, public policy, disability rights, race, gender or ethnicity. The Fellowship supports reflection and inquiry by inspiring fellows to connect their scholarly work with that of their peers and designated faculty, staff and community leaders. Faculty and community advisors are available to meet with Fellows, including Eli Wolff '00, a Visiting Fellow in Sport and Development and former Director of Research at the Center for Sport and Society.

This initiative was established in 2007 through the generosity of Charles Royce, a 1961 graduate of Brown University and parent of two Brown graduates. Mr. Royce, president of Royce Funds, has served as a University trustee since 1989 and is an active member of several university committees.

Community Sport Fellowship
Awarded from 2018-19, the Community Sport Fellowship was a summer fellowship opportunity for Brown University student-athletes focused on strengthening the capacity of local community organizations to deliver sport opportunities for Providence-area youth. The goals of the program were to provide an experience that contributes to the academic experience of student-athletes; enhance the capacity of community organizations to provide sport and health opportunities for youth and families; create a community of student-athletes engaged in local sport development work; and strengthen partnerships between the Swearer Center, the Brown Athletic Department, academic departments and local community organizations.

The Swearer Center is where scholarship and service intersect. We work to engage students and faculty in community-based work in Providence and around the world. Since the University's founding, Brown students have been urged to lead lives of "usefulness and reputation." Today, Brown's educational philosophy continues to promote active community engagement as a central component of undergraduate education. For more information about the Swearer Center, click here.
