Evan Coleman
’13 (men's soccer)
"Adding Education to the Soccer Culture"
In many countries, soccer is seen not only as a game, but as a way
of life. However, the passion and enthusiasm that many children
have for this 'beautiful game' is left untapped. Evan will work
with Street Football World to analyze and articulate the approaches
that a select number of development organizations use to promote
education and opportunity among young soccer players, particularly
in the developing world.
Khalil Fuller ’14 (men's
rugby)
"NBA Math Hoops"
Khalil is the founder of NBA Math Hoops, a nonprofit organization
committed to improving math literacy among urban youth by creating
innovative educational tools that harness the power of basketball.
Khalil will explore the possibility of creating strategic
partnerships with charter schools and organizations known for their
work in underserved communities, as well as the potential of
incorporating Math Hoops' Classroom Kits. Additionally, Khalil will
develop a comprehensive strategy to measure the impact of the
classroom materials and their effects on participating youth.
Kasey Haas ’13 (gymnastics)
"Using Sport to Promote Policy and Awareness in the Lives of
the Disabled"
Sport programs for the disabled are critical in promoting social
inclusion. Kasey will investigate the effectiveness of strategies
to advance awareness and policy in an effort to increase inclusive
sport opportunities for disabled populations.
Erika Mueller ’13 (softball)
"Beyond Sport: Using Sport for Social Change"
Erika will spend the summer as an intern for Beyond Sport. She
will explore how Beyond Sport addresses local and global issues
through sport with particular regard to social inclusion and
conflict resolution.
John Sheridan
’13 (baseball)
"BASES Providence"
John will develop the Baseball Academy of Students Engaged in
Sport (BASES), a nonprofit organization he founded, in an effort to
increase graduation and college matriculation rates of at-risk
youth in Providence. BASES will provide coaching in baseball as
well as academic mentoring and college advising.
Jocelyn West
’13 (women's track & field)
"Investigating Practical Applications of Olympic Values to Promote
Healthy Physical and Moral Development in Dominica's Youth"
In partnership with the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC), Jocelyn
will explore how best to implement a summer pilot program aimed at
teaching the Olympic values of fairness and sportsmanship to
student-athletes, coaches and teachers in Dominica.
