Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches with Sweep Over Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (2-1) split two three set matches to close out play at the Ocean State Cup on Saturday (Sept. 6). The Bears dropped the first match of the day to Providence before beating Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE 3, BROWN 0
Brown couldn't get anything going offensively, falling 25-14, 25-21, 25-12 in the first game of the day. The Bears hit just .119 as a team with the Friars hitting .301. Brown also struggled with the serve, giving up eight aces while picking up just one.
Sophia Woflson led Brown with eight kills as Ally Panzloff and Mariia Sidorova each had six. Julia Kakkis guided the offense with 25 assists.
On defense, Jessie Golden had 14 digs and Wolfson led the way at the net with three blocks.
BROWN 3, RHODE ISLAND 0
The Bears rebounded to close out the night with a three-set sweep over Rhode Island, beating the Rams 25-19, 25-19 and 26-24.
Brown hit .301, led by Wolfson, hitting .500 while collecting a career-high 14 kills. Sidorova also reached double figures with 12 kills, hitting .235. Panzloff finished the night hitting .333 with nine kills. Kakkis tallied 41 assists and picked up Brown's first double-double of the season, adding 11 digs.
Golden tied Kakkis for the team lead with 11 digs. Brown was led in blocks by Hannah Flannery, Isabella Bonatakis and Wolfson with two blocks each.
The Bears built a six-point lead at 17-11 in the first set after a kill by Panzloff and used a 3-0 run after Rhode Island cut the lead to 22-19 to close out the first.
A late 3-0 run took a 19-16 lead to 22-16 after kills by Sidorova and Bonatakis. After allowing three points, the Bears again scored the final three points of the set to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set three went back and forth with Rhode Island taking a 20-18 lead before Brown tied it with two-straight points. Brown went up 23-22 after a kill by Wolfson but Rhode Island earned set point with two points. A kill by Wolfson tied the set before Panzloff gave Brown match point. Wolfson finished off the match with a kill.
UP NEXT
Brown will travel to Orlando, Fla., for its next weekend of play at UCF. The weekend starts on Friday, Sept. 12 with a match against Arkansas State.
