Volleyball Falls in Five-Setter to Florida Atlantic

ORLANDO, Fla. – Brown volleyball dropped a hard-fought five-set match with Florida Atlantic on Friday (Sept. 12) to begin their weekend at UCF.
Brown (2-2) were led on offense by Mariia Sidorova with 16 kills and Sophia Wolfson had 10 kills. Julia Kakkis guided the offense with 40 assists. Wolfson also finished the night with a team-best three service aces.
Florida Atlantic (6-3) had four players in double-figure kills, led by two players with 15 each. The Owls out-hit Brown .211 to .174 in the match.
Jessie Golden led Brown's defense with 23 digs, followed by Sidorova with and Yuna Yang with seven. At the net, the Bears collected eight blocks with Wolfson picking up five and Kakkis collecting four.
After dropping the first set 25-17, Brown responded with a 25-20 set win the second. In a set that featured eight ties, the last being 19-19, Brown used a 6-1 run to close out the set and tie the match.
With the third set tied at 16, Florida Atlantic scored five-straight points and the Bears would not get any closer than four the rest of the way, dropping set three 25-20.
The fourth set featured 15 ties and six lead changes with FAU taking an 18-16 lead before a block by the duo of Kakkis and Sarah Shaw tied the set at 18. Brown went up 22-20 after two Owls' errors but fell behind 23-22 after three-straight from FAU. A kill by Sidorova and an error by FAU gave Brown set point and Wolfson and Elizabeth Sessa combined for a block to force a fifth set.
In the fifth, Brown fell behind 7-2 but pulled back to 7-6 after a kill by Wolfson. Florida Atlantic pushed its lead to three and the Bears wouldn't get closer than two the rest of the way.
GAME NOTES
Brown will face off against Arkansas State on Saturday, Sept. 13 with the match beginning at 12 p.m.

- Wolfson reached double figure kills for the third time this season in four matches, matching her total for all of her freshman year.
- Kakkis collected her seventh 40-assist game of her career and her second-straight match with 40-assists. Kakkis has posted back-to-back 40-assist games three times in her career.
- Golden reached the 20-dig mark for the 20th time in her career and the first time this season. Golden's last 20-dig match was against Harvard on Nov. 9, 2024.
- This was the first match for the Bears to go longer than three sets in the last six matches, dating back to last season.
Brown will face off against Arkansas State on Saturday, Sept. 13 with the match beginning at 12 p.m.
