Volleyball Sweeps Bryant in Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (1-0) swept Bryant (0-4) in the Bears' season opener at Providence College on Friday night (Sept. 5) to start the Ocean State Cup.
Brown won the match 25-12, 29-27, 25-21 while hitting .281 and holding Bryant to just .182 hitting.
Mariia Sidorova led Brown and Ally Panzloff and Sophia Wolfson each had 11. Wolfson hit a blistering .625 and Panzloff hit .333 from the outside. Julia Kakkis guided Brown's offense with 36 assists.
On defense, Jessie Golden led Brown with 13 digs and the Bears finished the night with six blocks. Wolfson led the way with four, while Isabella Bonatakis and Julia Kakkis each had two.
Brown collected seven aces on the night with Sidorova picking up three and Hannah Flannery and Wolfson each adding two.
At 8-3 in the first set, Brown went on a 8-0 run to take a 16-3 lead and command of the first set. A kill by Sidorova and block by the duo of Wolfson and Kakkis ended the set.
Brown trailed 19-16 in the second set before a 4-0 run that featured three kills from Wolfson put the Bears up 20-19. The Bears had set point at 24-23 but Bryant scored the next two points. Brown fought off set points at 25-24 and 27-26, scoring three-straight points to capture set two after an ace by Sidorova.
A back-and-forth set saw Bryant take a 19-18 lead before Brown used a 4-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. Kills by Flannery and Wolfson gave Brown match point and after a point by the Bulldogs, a kill by Flannery ended the contest.
UP NEXT
Brown will play matches against Providence (1 p.m.) and Rhode Island (4 p.m.) on Saturday (Sept. 6) to close out play in the Ocean State Cup.
