Brown Stadium’s Top Games: No. 9 - November 25, 1925

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium, fans have been asked to vote for the top game in the stadium's history. Fans were able to choose from a list of 12 games during the month of August, with the top 10 games being unveiled each Friday throughout the 2025 season.
This week at No. 9 is Brown's epic showdown with Colgate on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1926, when they Bears were trying to finish off a perfect season.

Brown 10, Colgate 10
Over the years, Brown and Colgate developed a storied Thanksgiving Day rivalry, meeting 27 times on the holiday between 1924 and 1961, all of which came in Providence. The most legendary of those was when the Brown "Iron Men" took the field against Colgate in 1926 with their perfect 9-0 record on the line.
An eager crowd of 30,000 fans packed the stadium on a frigid day for the season finale. With the score tied 10-10 in the closing seconds, Brown lined up for a short game-winning field goal attempt, but the kick clanked off the left upright, ending the game in a tie and sending Brown to a 9-0-1 record. It wasn't a perfect record but remains the only undefeated season in program history.
The squad earned fame and the nickname "Iron Men" because the starting 11 played 60 minutes without substitution on consecutive weeks against Yale, Dartmouth, and well into the fourth quarter two weeks later against Harvard.
The team was ranked among the top nationally. Led by head coach Tuss McLaughry, its members were captain Hal Broda and Thurston Towle (both ends), tackles Ed Kevorkian and Paul Hodge, guards Lou Farber and Orland Smith, center Charles Consodine, quarterback Red Randall, halfbacks Dave Mishel and Ed Lawrence, and fullback Al Cornsweet.
