No. 21 Women’s Lacrosse Falls 15-9 to No. 19 Syracuse in NCAA Tournament First Round

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 21 Brown women's lacrosse team (10-7, 4-3) fell 15-9 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 19 Syracuse (10-8, 5-4) on Friday.
"It was an unbelievable season," head coach Katrina Dowd said. "I'm so proud of my seniors. They've helped lead this team to new heights and a historic season so I'm just grateful I got to spend two years with them, they've left this program in a better place. I'm super proud and appreciative of my staff, they've worked tirelessly day in and day out and they're a huge part of our success this year."
After Syracuse opened the scoring early in the first quarter, the Bears responded with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. Riley Peterson and Beth Anderson opened the scoring for the Bears.
Syracuse tied the game at two 1:23 after Anderson gave Brown a 2-1 lead. After the Orange tied the game, Maddie Joyce found the back of the net to reclaim the lead for Brown. Syracuse closed the first quarter on a 2-0 run to take a 4-3 lead into the second frame.
The Orange continued their run to open the second quarter with two-straight goals to extend the lead to 6-3. Leah Caputo ended the run with her first goal of the game to cut the deficit to 6-4. Syracuse then extended its lead to 9-4 with three straight goals. Following the run, each team scored two more goals as the Orange took an 11-6 advantage into the second half.
Both teams found the back of the net three times in the third quarter, including two-straight goals from Peterson and Avery Doran, Doran's goal cut the Syracuse lead to 12-8 with 8:33 remaining in the third. Following Doran's first goal, the Orange added a goal to extend its lead to 13-9. Doran found the back of the net for a second time in the third to cut the deficit to 13-9. Emma Ward extended to the Orange's lead with 45 seconds remaining in the third, bringing the score to 14-9 heading to the final 15 minutes.
Syracuse added one more goal in the fourth quarter to pick up the victory and advance to the Second Round.
Peterson, Joyce, Caputo, and Doran all had two goals while Annie Burton had four assists. Claire Mahoney replaced Anne Booth in goal after the first quarter and made five saves.
Brown concluded the 2025 season with 10 victories, which is tied for the most in a single season in program history. They also qualified for its first-ever Ivy League Tournament and its first-ever NCAA Tournament.
