PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two Brown student-athletes were recognized by the University on Friday with the prestigious Joukowsky Scholar-Athlete Award. The awards were presented at a ceremony and reception at the De Ciccio Family Auditorium at the Salomon Center for Teaching.
Jack Kelly and Akilah Cathey are the 2025 recipients of the Joukowsky Scholar-Athlete Award, given annually to two Brown students (one male and one female) who embody the best qualities of the scholar-athlete by achieving success in both the classroom and athletic competition – a reflection of Brown's commitment to the totality of individual accomplishment.
In his four years at Brown, Kelly has been a three-time NCAA All-American, two-time Ivy League Champion in the 100 Breaststroke, and has broken five school records. This season, Kelly posted the sixth-fastest 200 Breaststroke time in the nation and seventh-fastest 100 Breaststroke. Both swims are ranked 15th fastest all-time in the NCAA. At the 2025 Ivy League Championships, Jack received the Harold S. Ulen Career High Point Swimmer Award, given to the league senior who has scored the most championship points over four years. Jack has also twice been named a CSCAA First Team Scholar All-American by qualifying for NCAA's while maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher while concentrating in Mechanical Engineering. As a senior Jack was named First Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Communicators, the first men's swimmer to earn the honor at Brown.
Cathey's list of athletic accomplishments is unparalleled. She is a four-time All-American, and has been nominated twice for Women's College Player of the Year, the MA Sorensen, and was a finalist in 2024. Cathey has also won two 7s national championships and represented the United States as a U-20 National team member, scoring against Canada. Cathey has been a team captain in her junior and senior years, and has held internships at both Bank of America and Memphis Inner City Rugby. She is an officer in her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, and a community-building chair for Harambee's House.
