Women’s Basketball Falls 83-61 in Season Opener at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Brown women's basketball team (0-1) opened their 2025-26 campaign at Belmont (1-1) on Friday night, falling 83-61 to the Bruins.
Senior forward Alyssa Moreland and junior guard Olivia Young led Brown in scoring with 22 and 13 points respectively. Moreland also recorded her first double-double of the year with 11 rebounds in addition to her 22 points.
It was a night of firsts as new Bears Charlotte Adams-Lopez and Isabella Wesley collected their first collegiate points, while Monet Witherspoon netted her first basket as a Bear.
The Bears came out strong, scoring 19 points in the first quarter. Sophomore forward Aima Ofunrein netted the first pair of points for Brown, 55 seconds into regulation. Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities, keeping competition tight and the score close. The Bruins went on a seven-point run to tie the score up, and then held a four-point edge (23-19) over the Bears to close out the first quarter.
Brown opened up the second quarter with a pair of made free-throws from senior guard Mackenzie Leahy, cutting their deficit to one. The Bears and Bruins exchanged baskets midway through the quarter, with Brown remaining on top (37-35) heading into halftime. Before the buzzer, Moreland hit a hookshot jumper which was countered by a Belmont three-pointer.
Belmont began the third quarter with a 7-0 run, when Ofunrein put a stop to it with a layup. The Bears had their own 7-0 run later in the quarter, giving them the 51-50 lead at the time. Belmont tied the score with just below two minutes remaining in the quarter, and took a four-point lead at the end.
The Bruins scored the most points in the fourth quarter with 27, pushing them past Brown 83-61.

The Bears will continue their season-opening three-game road stretch at Holy Cross on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
