Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped at Five in Four Set Loss to Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (12-7, 7-3 Ivy) had its winning streak snapped at five as the Bears lost to Princeton (12-6, 7-3 Ivy) in four sets on Sunday (Nov. 2), 27-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-18.
Brown was led by a career-high 14 kills by Fisayo Afonja, who hit .323 on the afternoon. Mariia Sidorova finished the match with 13 kills and Sophia Wolfson added 11. Julia Kakkis guided the offense with 42 assists.
On defense, Jessie Golden collected a team-high 22 digs and Sidorova finished with 11 for a double-double. Wolfson led Brown at the net with six blocks and Afonja had four.
In the previous matchup with Princeton, Brown had 11 service aces and did not commit an error. That changed on Sunday as the Bears committed 14 service errors and finishing with just six aces.
Princeton took a 24-21 lead in the first set but the Bears battled back with kills by Sidorova, Wolfson and Ally Panzloff to tie the set at 24. After the teams traded points, Princeton took the first set with back-to-back points.
Brown dominated in the second set, hitting .371 in the frame, the only set the Bears hit over .200. With the Bears up 15-12, Brown scored the next four points with two of those coming from kills by Sarah Shaw to jump ahead 19-12. A 4-0 run that was capped by an ace from Golden gave Brown the set win.
In set three, Princeton took a 20-14 lead but the Bears responded scoring five of the next six points, including back-to-back kills from Sidorova to make it 21-19. Another 4-1 run by Brown, capped by a block from Shaw and Afonja tied the set at 23. The Tigers answered with back-to-back kills to close out the set.
The Bears took a 12-11 lead in the set four with a block by Kakkis and Wolfson but Brown gave up a 6-0 run that all but put the match away. The Bears would pull within three twice but could not get any closer.
GAME NOTES
Brown will hit the road for the final time this regular season as the Bears will head to Dartmouth on Friday, Nov. 7 with first serve against the Big Green set for 6 p.m.

- Afonja has finished with three-straight matches in double-figures after only playing in five matches this season.
- Kakkis has now gone three-straight matches with at least 40 assists for the first time this season.
- Golden posted back-to-back 20+ dig matches for the third time this year. She has had at least 20 digs in three of her last four matches.
