PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After pulling off a big top 10 upset of the University of Rhode Island on Friday night, the Brown football team has been selected as the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week, the organization announced on Monday. Brown is also receiving votes in the latest Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll, marking the second time in three weeks the Bears are receiving votes in one of the two national polls.
Entering the game ranked No. 8 in the Stats Perform FCS Poll and No. 10 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll, Rhody's high powered offense was stymied by the Brown defense which forced four turnovers in the Bears' 28-21 triumph.
The victory was Brown's first win over a ranked opponent since 2009 when it defeated No. 19/20 Holy Cross in 2009, and the first win over a top 10 opponent since 1981, when it defeated No. 10 URI in the first-ever Governor's Cup battle.
Senior Elias Archie led the defense by having a hand in three of Brown's four takeaways including an interception, forced fumble, and fumble recovery. For his efforts, Archie was named the New England Football Writers Gold Helmet winner this week and earned a spot on the honor roll for the Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week.
Offensively, Rhode Island native Ty Pezza set a career-high with 93 receiving yards on eight catches and a touchdown. Junior quarterback James Murphy was 20-for-27 passing for 201 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore running back Matt Childs ran for 64 yards and scored two touchdowns.
The Bears will return to action this Friday evening with another in-state showdown against Bryant. Kickoff in Smithfield is set for 7 p.m.
