Archie Named Gold Helmet Winner by New England Football Writers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown senior defensive back Elias Archie has been named this week's Division I Gold Hemet winner by the New England Football Writers following his game changing performance in Friday night's upset win over No. 8/10 Rhode Island.
The award is given each week to the top player in New England across Division I FBS and FCS Football.
Archie had a hand in three of Brown's four takeaways in the Bears' huge 28-21 victory, directly impacting the outcome of the contest, and giving Brown its first Governor's Cup win since 2017.
On the opening drive of the game, Archie picked off a pass and returned it 13 yards to the 10-yard line, which set up a Brown touchdown two plays later for the early 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Early in the third quarter, Archie forced a URI fumble at the one-yard line, which rolled through the end zone for a touchback, taking what would have been a touchdown off the board and preserving Brown's seven-point lead at the time. The Bears then went back up the field and stuck the ball in the end zone to push their lead to 28-14.
Early in the fourth quarter, Archie jumped on top of a fumble near midfield for another key takeaway that killed a Rhody drive.
In total, he finished the night with 4.0 tackles, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one interception.
The victory was Brown's first win over a ranked opponent since 2009 and the team's first win over a top-10 opponent since 1981.
The Bears will face Bryant this Friday night in another in-state rivalry matchup in Smithfield.
