Volleyball Beats Penn in Four Sets for Fifth-Straight Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (12-6, 7-2 Ivy) pushed its win streak to five matches with a four-set victory over Penn (9-10, 3-6 Ivy), 25-15, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17, on Friday night (Oct. 31) inside Pizzitola Sports Center.
Mariia Sidorova led Brown with 17 kills, hitting .385 and tallied 12 digs for a double-double. Sophia Wolfson finished the night with 13 kills on .440 hitting and added seven blocks. Fisayo Afonja posted a double-double with 11 kills, 12 digs and finished with seven blocks. Sarah Shaw finished the night with seven kills and seven blocks.
Julia Kakkis guided the offense with 45 assists and picked up nine digs.
On defense, Jessie Golden had 20 digs and collected her 1,400th-career assist in the process, moving into third-place all-time in program history.
The Bears started to take control in the first set with a four-point run that featured two kills by Sarah Shaw and a block by Shaw and Afonja. Another 4-0 run that ended with back-to-back blocks by Wolfson and Afonja made the score 18-9. Kills by Shaw and Sidorova closed out the set for the Bears.
With set two tied at 21, Penn scored three-straight points to earn set point. Brown fought off all three points to tie the set at 24 but Penn picked up back-to-back kills to win the set.
Penn led 13-12 in the third before Brown responded with a 7-0 run. Sidorova had three blocks in the run and it ended with a block by Kakkis and Wolfson. With the Bears up 22-19, Brown earned set point with kills by Ally Panzloff and Afonja. One point later, another kill by Afonja ended the set.
Brown trailed 12-10 before a 4-0 run put the Bears up 14-12. Up 16-15, Brown scored the next five points to go up 21-15. The match closed out with Wolfson and Maddy Smith and Smith and Shaw combining for two blocks.

The Bears will be back in action on their home court on Sunday (Nov. 2) with a matchup against Princeton beginning at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
