Volleyball Cruises Past Columbia in Saturday Sweep

NEW YORK – Brown volleyball (8-6, 3-2, Ivy) made quick work of Columbia (2-14, 0-5 Ivy) with a sweep over the Lions on Saturday (Oct. 11), 25-22, 25-19, 25-19.
The Bears swept Columbia for the fifth-straight meeting behind a strong offensive performance by Mariia Sidorova, who had 13 kills and hit .290. Sophia Wolfson and Ally Panzloff were both second on the team with eight kills. Wolfson hit .375 in the match. Julia Kakkis led Brown's offense with 28 assists.
Jessie Golden led the Brown defense with 14 digs and at the net, Wolfson and Sarah Shaw each had three blocks.
The Bears managed just five service aces with two coming from Golden.
Tied at 10, Brown scored six of the next seven points to take control of the set. Columbia would pull within one late in the set but Brown would close out the frame with a kill from Sidorova and a block by the duo of Flannery and Eve McLaury.
Back-to-back kills by Wolfson put the Bears up 6-2 early and a 4-0 run midway through the set gave Brown a 17-11 advantage. Up 22-19, a 3-0 run by the Bears that featured an ace from Flannery and a kill from Sidorova ended the set.
Columbia responded, taking a 9-4 lead early in the third but Brown kept its composure and climbed back into the set, going on a 4-1 run that was capped by an ace from Golden to tie the frame at 12. A 5-1 run with back-to-back kills from Sidorova put Brown up 21-18. After a Columbia point, Brown scored the last four points with kills by Flannery, Sidorova and Wolfson to end the match.
GAME NOTES
Brown will play its first home matches of the season next weekend as the Bears welcome Harvard (Oct. 17) and Dartmouth (Oct. 18) to the Pizzitola Sports Center.

- Brown has now won 17-straight sets against Columbia, dating back to third set on October, 19, 2019. The five-straight sweeps are the most against the Lions since Brown swept 10-straight matches from Nov. 3, 1984 to Nov. 10, 1990.
 - Sophia Wolfson had her double-digit kill streak stopped at six games.
 - Hannah Flannery hit .400 for the third time this season, finishing the match with five kills and seven digs.
