Field Hockey Drops Opener to UMass Lowell
9/6/2024 6:51:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Katie McCallum and Mia Karine Myklebust scored for the Bears (0-1, 0-0 Iv y League) in the opener, but the UMass Lowell River Hawks (2-1, 0-0 AE) held off a fourth quarter charge to take a 3-2 win Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
"I'm really pleased with our performance, the team was able to execute a gameplan," said head coach Britt Broady. "We had plenty of chances on cage, we had great shots, great midfield movement, and great outletting. So, it's coming down to getting ahold of our own rebounds and taking advantage of opportunities that our opponent gives us.
"Today I felt like we had control of tempo throughout the game, and we just didn't take advantage of our opportunities. UMass Lowell's goalkeeping, particularly in the second half, was outstanding."
Moments after Lexi Pellegrino hit the crossbar, Karli Penrod gave the River Hawks the early lead with her second goal of the season three minutes into the opening quarter. Penrod finished a rebound off the initial shot from Alissia De Vries.
Four minutes later, McCallum responded with Brown's first goal of the season. She blasted a shot off the penalty corner to beat goalie Christina Calandra (2 saves) with assists going to Juliette Meijaard and Lucy Adams.
After a scoreless second quarter, Karlijn Kerkhof put UMass Lowell ahead 2-1, finding her own rebound seconds into the third quarter.
The Bears responded again as Myklebust tallied her first goal of the season late in the third quarter to beat goalie Marie Oliemans (8 saves), who replaced Calandra to start the second half.
Madison Leeper struck for UMass Lowell's third goal of the game minutes into the fourth quarter for a 3-2 lead.
The Bears had numerous chances to equalize the game, finishing the fourth quarter with nine shots and five penalty corners. However, the River Hawks held the Bears at bay to preserve the one-goal victory.
