Volleyball Drops Ivy League Opener to Yale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (3-7, 0-1 Ivy) fell to Yale (6-3, 1-0 Ivy) in straight sets to open Ivy League play.
Brown was led by Mariia Sidorova with 11 kills but the Bears struggled to get the offense going, hitting .119 as a team against the Bulldogs defense. Isabella Bonatakis and Ally Panzloff were tied for second on the team with six kills. Julia Kakkis guided Brown's offense with 22 assists.
On defense, Jessie Golden led Brown with 14 digs and Victoria Vo finished with 12. The Bears finished with nine blocks on the night, led by Bonatakis with five blocks. Beau Vanderlaan and Sophia Wolfson each had four kills.
Laurece Abraham led Yale with 13 kills, followed by Gigi Barr (11) and Betsy Goodenow (10).
Set one was tight with Brown hitting .171 and Yale hitting .180. The Bears took a 20-17 lead after a service error and a kill by Sidorova made the score 21-19. Three-straight points from Yale put the Bulldogs up one before Sidorova tied the set again. Yale scored the final three points to win set one 25-22.
Brown's offense went cold in set two as the Bears hit .063. Yale had the best set of the night, hitting .326. The Bears tied the set at 12 after a kill by Sidorova and block from Vanderlaan but allowed Yale to score six of the next seven points to jump ahead by five. Brown never got closer than four the rest of the way, falling in set two 25-17.
Yale took control of the third set with a 5-0 run to go up 15-10 but the Bears fought back with a 3-0 run that featured two kills by Bonatakis and one from Sidorova. Yale closed out the match with another 5-0 run to win the third 25-16.

Brown will be on the road for their next Ivy League contests with a trip to Princeton (Oct. 4) and Penn (Oct. 5).
