Sailing Wins 2024 Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown University sailing team has been awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy for the 2023-2024 season. This award is given to the overall top team in college sailing. It marks the second Fowle Trophy win, with the first coming in 1991. Â
The Leonard M. Fowle Memorial Trophy honors the late Graduate Secretary of the New England District and Executive Vice President of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association. He served in both positions from when they were created until his death in 1973. He had a strong devotion to sailing that helped pave the way for college sailing today.
The Fowle Trophy is given to the team with the highest number of Fowle Trophy Points. The points are determined by utilizing the composite results of the Women's Singlehanded, Open Singlehanded, Match Race, Open Team Race, Women's Team Race, Women's Fleet Race Semifinals/Finals, and Open Fleet Race Semifinals/Final Championship Regattas. Each team receives points toward the Fowle Trophy Award based on its place in each of the events in the composite.Â
Brown is just the fourth different program to win the award since 2011, joining the College of Charleston, Stanford, and Yale. The Bears are the seventh program since 2001 to earn the trophy along with Boston College, Harvard, and Georgetown.Â
The Bears placed within the top five at five out of the seven National Championships in College Sailing, including a first place finish at the Match Race Nationals, a second-place finish at the Women's Singlehanded Nationals, and fourth-place finishes at the Open Team Race Nationals and Women's Fleet Race Nationals.
The Fowle Trophy caps a stellar season for Brown as a team and individually. Two Bears - Brianna Ross and Brielle Willoughby - earned First Team and Second Team All-Ivy honors, respectively.Â
In the NEISA, 12 Bears earned year-end honors highlighted by Savannah Young earning the Babineau Crew of the Year honor. Additionally, Vera Allen was a finalist for Open Rookie of the Year and Connor Nelson was a finalist for the Open Skipper of the Year.Â
