Field Hockey Set for Foreign Trip to South Africa

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey program is set for a foreign trip to South Africa, beginning on Saturday, May 18 and continuing through Monday, May 27.
The Bears will spend the trip sightseeing in and around Cape Town and taking on local opponents in three matches.
"Since my arrival at Brown, my staff and I have worked to develop an increased level of field hockey while nurturing a positive sense of togetherness and perspective of why our investments in culture, sport and each other make an enormous impact," said head coach Britt Broady. "This trip to South Africa mirrors those values and is very much a celebration of how we've developed!
"In addition to playing three matches, we will immerse ourselves in the South African culture. We will have the opportunity to work with 'INSPIRE Children and Youth,' which provides training for women and after-school programming for young children in a rural farming area where the average school drop-out is third grade. I'm also particularly excited to tour Robben Island and learn more about the freedom fighters and Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid activism.
"I'm thrilled to enjoy the experience with this group who have poured themselves into Brown Field Hockey. They are truly exceptional young women, and we are incredibly fortunate to have generous supporters who have allowed us this opportunity!"
The Bears are set to take on Conberg Hockey Club (May 20), Durbanville Hockey Club (May 21), and Stellenbosch University (May 23).
The team will have opportunities to explore Cape Town, tour Robben Island, go zip lining, and give back to the INSPIRE Children and Youth organization.

BROWN UNIVERSITY SPORTS FOUNDATION
The Brown University Sports Foundation (BUSF) is the lifeblood of the athletics program, and exists to enhance the student-athlete experience through philanthropic support from alumni, parents, fans and friends. A gift through the Sports Foundation makes an immediate impact on today's Brown Bears and helps them to be their best in the classroom, in competition and most importantly in the community.
