Women's Rugby Picks Up Two Wins to Advance to Quarterfinals at Tropical 7s
3/29/2024 9:00:00 PM | Women's Rugby
TAMPA, Fla. – The Brown Bears took two wins in pool play at the 2024 Tropical 7s to finish second and advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Brown bounced back from an opening loss to the Tsunami Canada Misfits before taking down Penn State and Queens University of Charlotte.
"We knew the Canadian All-Star team would be quite a challenge and the team really took lessons from that game to heart and applied them to the subsequent games," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach. "Julia Murray, Morgan Cunningham, Kate Muldoon, and Lily Nowak had high work rates and Aziza Alford was extremely physical in the contact area. We were able to use our entire roster today and get valuable minutes for everyone."
The Canadian All-Star squad captured a 27-0 win over Brown to begin the tournament, but from there it was all Bears.
Bruno controlled play against Penn State and took a 31-0 win. Nowak touched down twice while Kate Muldoon, Jania Vandevoorde, and Olivia Baptiste each recording one try. Julia Murray added three conversions in the win.
The Bears continued the strong play against Queens and finished with a 24-5 victory. Morgan Cunningham opened the scoring with an early try with Murray hitting the conversion before Muldoon added her second of the day with Murray hitting her fifth conversion of the day.
Queens got on the board to make it 14-5, but Ashley Amparo capped the day with a penalty try to push the final to 21-5.
Brown takes on Sacred Heart tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Tropical 7s Quarterfinals.
