Women's Rugby Takes Fourth at Tropical 7s

TAMPA, Fla. – The Brown Bears took down Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round at the Tropical 7s, ultimately finishing in fourth place at the two-day Tournament.
Brown fell to Trinity Western in the semifinal and Dartmouth in the third-place game to pick up fourth.
"We got better every single match and could not have asked for a better tournament to prepare us for the rest of the season," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach. "Nikki Lynch and Morgan Cunningham really rose to the occasion in the knockout rounds and we know we can play with the best of them."
Lynch touched down just one minute into the match against the Pioneers and Julia Murray added the conversion to make it 7-0 before Murray touched down to extend the lead to 12-0.
Lily Nowak and Jania Vandevoorde recorded tries less than a minute apart with Murray hitting the conversion following Vandevoorde's try to push the lead to 24-0. From there, Sacred Heart added two tries and a conversion to cut into the lead before the final horn.
In a semifinal matchup against Trinity Western (Canada), Brown went down 10-0 early in the match before Lynch recorded her second try of the day with Murray hitting her fourth conversion to make it 10-7.
The Canadian squad added another try and conversion to make it 17-7 before Akilah Cathey touched down with Murray successful on the conversion in the waning moments of the match to push the score to 17-14.
In an Ivy League matchup for third place, Brown jumped to an early lead with Lynch and Cunningham recording tries in the first half. Murray nailed her fifth conversion following Lynch's try to give the Bears a 12-0 lead.
The Big Green responded in the second half with three tries and two conversions to flip the score and take a 19-12 victory.
Brown returns to New England to compete in the Crimson 7s next Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
