11/12/2024 3:07:00 PM | Women's Sailing, Coed Sailing
Beautiful Florida weather and light to moderate winds made for some really great and close racing for the five Brown sailors who were selected to compete in the two 18-boat championships, featuring the best singlehanded sailors in college sailing in the ILCA Olympic class sailboats.
Â
Guthrie Braun '26, competing in his third Open Singlehanded National Championship, put together a consistent scoreline after 13 races to finish an impressive second place overall, winning the George Griswold Trophy. Braun had eight races in the top five, including a first place and two second places finishes, finishing 13 points behind Daniel Escudero '25 from the Webb Institute. Martins Atilla '27, who led after Saturday's eight races, finished a strong fourth place overall with seven races in the top five and two race wins, giving the Bears two of the top four places at the championship. Atilla was just one point out of third place overall. Freshman Julian Dahiya '28 finished 13th overall, including a race win in race #2.
Â
Katharine Doble '26, who finished second at last year's championship and won the New England Women's Singlehanded Championship to qualify this year, finished sixth overall in the 18-boat Women's Singlehanded Championship. Doble was in a tight battle for third place overall through most of the event and finished just four points off the podium. She had five races in the top five out of the 12 races in the women's fleet. Sidney Moyer '27, sailing in her second Women's Singlehanded National Championship, finished 10th place overall with three races in the top four. The winner of the Janet Lutz Trophy was Harvard's Sophia Montgomery '25.
Â
Up next for the Bears is the College Sailing Match Race National Championships, November 15-17, at Seawanhaka Yacht Club in New York. Along with Guthrie Braun '26 as the qualified skipper, his team is Camren Spriggs '27, Katherine McNamara '26 and Charles Gish '28. Caroline Keeffe-Jones '26 will be going as the alternate. The Bears are the defending Match Race National Champions.Â
This will be the last event of the 2024 fall season.
