PROVIDENCE – It was a wonderful afternoon for rugby as the Brown Bears (5-1-1) took down the Army Black Knights (5-2-0) in a pivotal conference showdown on senior day.
Brown and Army traded blows for much of the first half, but the Bears were slightly better. The Bears traded tries for penalty kicks and outscored Army in the early stages. Senior Nikki Lynch scored twice as Brown took a 21-14 lead into halftime.
Brown wore down Army with aggressive carries through the middle of the field to begin the second half. Three consecutive tries led to an enormous 40-14 lead. Akilah Cathey was unstoppable, scoring three times.
Army's conditioning proved critical as they charged back late. Three straight tries of their own led to a one-score game late. Brown made a crucial stop late as time expired.
The Bears won the contest, 40-33.
"It was an incredibly physical match and we are so proud of all the student-athletes that stepped up to a formidable Army squad," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathy Flores women's rugby head coach. "Akilah Cathey was dominant in her carries."
