Volleyball Off to Best Start After Wins Over George Mason and Radford

FAIRFAX, Va. – Brown volleyball moved to 6-0 on the season with wins over George Mason (3-1) and Radford (3-0) on Friday. With the win over Radford the Bears are now off to their best start in program history.
BROWN 3, GEORGE MASON 1
Brown started the day with a four-set win over George Mason. In one of the tightest matches of the year so far, Brown picked up the win despite hitting just .184 as a team and allowing George Mason to hit .215.
Mariia Sidorova led Brown with 16 kills ad added 14 digs for a double-double. Kate Sheire finished the match with 15 kills. Kayla Griebl added 10 kills with seven digs. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 40 assists and posted a double-double with 17 digs.
On defense, Jessie Golden led Brown with 28 digs. Beau Vanderlaan finished the night four blocks, while Griebl and Gabby Derrick each had three.
Tied at 14 in the first set, Brown used an 8-2 run to jump ahead 22-16. George Mason pulled within two multiple times but two kills from Sidorova ended the set.
Brown earned set point in the second set at 24-21, but George Mason finished the set with five-straight points to win the second set 26-24.
Set three was tied at 20 when Griebl had two kills as part of a 4-0 run to give Brown set point. After two points, Vanderlaan had a kill to give Brown the 25-22 set win.
The Patriots went up 9-8 early in the fourth when Brown took control of the set with a 12-1 run. George Mason tried to climb back into the match, getting within 24-19 but Sidorova ended the match with a kill.
BROWN 3, RADFORD 0
In the second match of the day, Brown got the offense going, hitting .283, while Radford was held to .046 hitting. Sheire led Brown with 11 kills and Vanderlaan finished with eight kills and six blocks. Both Sidorova and Hannah Flannery each had seven kills. Jenkins handed out 32 assists and added five kills and seven digs.
Golden finished with 16 digs to lead the Bears defense. Brown finished the game with 12 blocks on the night.
Brown held Radford to a negative hitting percentage in the first two sets and the Bears cruised to a 25-13 set one win and scored the last four points of the second set to break a 21-21 tie and when set two 25-21.
Set three featured multiple runs by each team until a kill by Sheire gave Brown a 24-22 lead. Radford fought off two set points before Brown earned another match point after a kill by Sheire. Radford held off one more match point before Flannery and an error by Radford gave Brown the win.
UP NEXT
Brown will take on Robert Morris on Saturday (Sept. 9) at 11 a.m. to finish up their weekend.
