PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team took down UC San Diego 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"This was a great bounce back win," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We generated a lot of chances on goal, and scored two great goals. I think we could have taken care of more chances in the final third but the fact that we are creating is a step in the right direction.
"It was great to have Jess Hinton back in the lineup – she gives a lot of presence, experience, and leadership back there that helped up get the shutout. We have another tough match on Wednesday, but today was a great win and a building block for us to continue to grow as a team."
The Bears got out to a fast start, putting four shots on goal in the first 11 minutes, but just weren't able to find the back of the net. Brown's breakthrough didn't come until the start of the second half.
In the 48th minute, Evelyn Calhoon settled a ball in the midfield and found an open Joy Okonye. Okonye fed a ball straight through the Tritons' backline, where Brittany Raphino was able to run onto it. One-on-one with the goalie, Raphino only needed one touch to move around UC San Diego's Kera Fitzgerald and deposit the ball into the open net.
Just three minutes later, the Bears doubled their lead off the foot of Naya Cardoza. Okonye put a corner straight into the middle of the box, where Raphino was first to it. Her header was cleared off the line by a Triton defender, but straight to Cardoza who put it away.
On the day, Brown outshot UC San Diego 20-7, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears also held the edge in corners, 7-2.
Brown will be back at Stevenson-Pincince this Wednesday, Sept. 6 for a 7 p.m. matchup with No. 23/14 Saint Louis.
