Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker at Yale to Start Ivy Play

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown volleyball (9-2, 0-1 Ivy) lost a five-set thriller at Yale on Friday (Sept. 22) to start Ivy League play, 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 23-25, 16-18.
Brown was led by 18 kills from Mariia Sidorova, 17 from Kate Sheire and 16 from Beau Vanderlaan. Kayla Griebl also finished in double-figures with 10 and Cierra Jenkins added six.
The Bears finished the night hitting .246 and the offense was guided by a season-high 55 assists from Jenkins. Vanderlaan led Brown with a .538 hitting percentage.
Both Jenkins and Griebl had double-doubles as Jenkins had 14 digs and Griebl added 10. The Bears totaled 71 digs on the night with Jessie Golden collecting 25 and Victoria Vo adding 11.
At the net, Brown had 13 blocks with Vanderlaan and Isabella Bonatakis leading the team with four each. Gabby Derrick and Sheire each had three blocks.
Yale had an 18-15 lead in the first set before Brown stormed back to tie the set at 20 with a block by Bonatakis. Brown used two kills from Sheire to go up 23-21 and earned the set win after another kill by Sheire who finished with seven kills in the first set.
The second set was all Brown as the Bears hit .500 in the frame. After an error made it 6-5 fin favor of Brown, the Bears used a 14-3 run to go up 20-8. Yale got as close as seven late in the set but Brown got a kill by Sidorova and a service ace by Vanderlaan to close out the set.
Brown fell behind by as much as seven in the third set but stayed in the game, climbing all the way back to being down one at 23-22 after a block by Derrick. Brown held off one set point for Yale but a kill by the Bulldogs kept the match going.
The fourth set featured 13 ties and six lead changes as neither team had more than a three-point lead at any time during the set. Brown was down 22-19 but kills by Sidorova and Griebl pulled the Bears back within one. A kill by Griebl and block by Derrick tied the set at 23 but Yale responded with a block and a Brown error sent the match to a fifth set.
Yale jumped out to a 5-2 lead but the Bears came back to tie the set at eight after a kill by Jenkins. A kill by Sidorova tied the set 10-10 before Yale scored three-straight points. The Bulldogs earned match point at 14-11 but the Bears got two kills by Vanderlaan and a block by Vanderlaan and Jenkins to tie the set at 14. The two teams traded the next five points as Yale earned match point at 17-16 and a kill from the Bulldogs ended the five-set thriller.

Brown will return home for the first time since September 5 when the Bears host Princeton (Sept. 29) and Penn (Sept. 30) next weekend as Ivy League play continues.
