Volleyball Takes Down Rhode Island For Third-Straight Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (3-0) remained perfect on the season after a 3-1 win at Rhode Island (1-5) on Saturday night.
Brown was led by 12 kills from Beau Vanderlaan, who also hit .429 on the night to lead the Bears. Hannah Flannery finished the match with 10 kills while Kayla Griebl and Jilienne Widener each had nine. Cierra Jenkins the Brown offense with 29 assists.
On defense, Brown held Rhode Island to just .079 hitting. The Bears finished with 55 digs and 13 blocks on the night. Jessie Golded led Brown with 20 digs and Gabby Derrick had a team-high seven blocks. Vanderlaan added five blocks and Flannery had four.
Brown finished the night with six service aces. Golden had three aces on the night.
The Bears fell behind 10-8 in the first set but stayed close. With the set tied at 14, Brown rattled off six-straight points to go up 21-15, finished by back-to-back kills from Jenkins and Vanderlaan and a kill by Griebl. A block by Derrick closed out the set for the Bears with a 25-18 win.
Brown cruised in the second set, jumping ahead 16-5, thanks to a 10-0 run that featured four kills by Vanderlaan and two from Mariia Sidorova. Flannery had two late kills to give Brown a 25-11 set win.
The Bears took an 18-12 lead but Rhode island did not go away, pulling within one at 20-19. Isabella picked up a kill to stop the run but URI scored three-straight to take a 22-21 lead. After Jenkins tied the set with a kill, Rhode Island scored the next three points to force a fourth set.
The two teams traded early runs in the fourth and the set was tight with Brown tying it at 16 with a kill by Griebl. After URI scored the next point, Brown scored five-straight points with two kills by Vanderlaan and two from Jenkins to go up 21-17. Brown closed out the match with a block from Derrick and Flannery
