Volleyball Sweeps UConn As Non-Conference Play Ends

STORRS, Conn. – Brown volleyball improved to 9-1 on the season with a three-game sweep at UConn to close out non-conference play.
The Bears were led by Beau Vanderlaan with 10 kills, who hit .667 on the night. Kayla Griebl was second on the team with eight kills.
Mariaa Sidorova finished with a team-high 15 digs and had six kills. Cierra Jenkins dished out 27 assists and had 11 digs. Victoria Vo and Kate Danaher each had double-digit digs with 12 and 11, respectively.
"This weekend was a test of our depth and teamwork," said head coach Taylor Virtue. "We had so many people step up and be ready in important moments which is a credit to the culture we're building and the selfless nature of this team. I'm really proud of a 2-1 weekend on the road and excited for more!"
Brown held UConn to .034 hitting as the Bears finished with 55 digs and matched its season-high with 13 blocks. Vanderlaan was the leader at the net for Brown with eight blocks and Griebl had five.
The Bears started out strong, getting off to a 12-3 start and pushed it to 16-5 after a block by Sidorova and Isabella Bonatakis. Brown maintained a 10-point lead until a four-point run by the Huskies made it 22-15. A kill by Jenkins gave Brown set point and an error by the Huskies gave Brown the set at 25-17.
Another hot start by the Bears put Brown up 10-3 after a kill by Vanderlaan. An ace by Melie Vaioleti put Brown up eight at 14-6. The lead dwindled to three but an 8-1 run by the Bears that featured three kills and a block from Griebl gave Brown set point. Brown won the set 25-16 after another Griebl kill.
The third set was close as Brown led 15-13 until the Bears scored five of the next six points to go up 20-14. The Bears took advantage of a couple of errors by UConn to earn match point and Kate Sheire earned a kill to close out the match.

Brown will begin Ivy League play with a road contest at Yale on Friday, September 22.
