Volleyball Beats Binghamton, Falls to Michigan State

STORRS, Conn. – Brown volleyball pushed its winning streak to eight games with a five-set win over Binghamton before it ended with a four-set loss to Michigan State on Saturday (Sept. 16).
BROWN 3, BINGHAMTON 2
The Bears were led by Mariia Sidorova and Kayla Griebl who each had a career-high 19 kills. Beau Vanderlaan finished the match with 15 kills and hit .357 and Kate Sheire added 12 kills. Brown had 74 kills on the day, the most since posting 75 kills against Penn back in 2014.
The offense was guided by Cierra Jenkins, who had 44 assists and Kate Danaher had 21 assists.
Four Bears finished with double-doubles as Jenkins had 18 digs, Griebl had 14, Sidorova had 13 and Danaher had 11. Victoria Vo led Brown with 22 digs. In total, Brown collected 83 digs, the most in a match since having 93 digs against Yale on Oct. 22, 2021.
Brown fell behind early in the first set but used a 7-2 run to take a 16-13 lead. After two points by Binghamton made it 22-20 in favor of the Bears a kill by Sidorova, a Bearcat error and an ace by Jenkins gave Brown a 25-20 set win.
Binghamton bounced back to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-22 to put Brown in its first 2-1 hole on the season.
Two kills be Sheire helped Brown take a 13-8 lead in set four but Binghamton pulled within one at 15-14. After a timeout, Brown found the hot hand in Sidorova for four kills over Brown's next seven points and the Bears pushed the lead to 21-16. A kill by Griebl and two errors made the score 25-18 and forced a fifth set.
In Brown's first five-set match of the season, kills by Sheire and Vanderlaan put Brown up 7-5 but Binghamton came back to tie the set at 8-8. Vanderlaan and Jenkins put Brown up 10-8 and the two teams traded the next five points with two kills by Sidorova to make it 12-11 Brown. Griebl had back-to-back kills to give Brown match point and after a point for Binghamton, Griebl finished off the match with a kill.
MICHIGAN STATE 3, BROWN 1
The Bears' eight-game winning streak came to an end in a four-set loss to Michigan State to close out the day.
Kate Sheire led the Bears with 14 kills and was one of four players to have double-digit kills. Beau Vanderlaan finished with 13 kills and hit. 722. Kayla Griebl had 12 kills and added 11 digs and Mariia Sidorova had 10 kills.
Cierra Jenkins finished the night with 39 assists and 10 digs and Victoria Vo led the defense with 14 digs.
Brown fell behind 15-8 in the first set but started to climb back into the set scoring five of the next seven points. Michigan State held the lead and eared set point at 24-22 but a kill and block by Vanderlaan tied the set at 24.
Brown earned set point twice but both times Michigan State fought it off. The Spartans took a 29-28 lead but Sheire's kill tied the set. After an error by Michigan State, a kill from Vanderlaan gave Brown a 31-29 set win.
The second set was tied at eight after three-straight points from Brown but Michigan State scored four consecutive points to pull away. Brown was able to get within two multiple times throughout the set but could not get any closer, falling the second 25-21.
Set three was all Spartans as Michigan State took an early 7-1 lead and the Bears never got closer than four as Brown lost set three 25-13.
Brown came back down from 8-1 to pull within one at 21-20 after four-straight points with kills from Sidorova, Griebl and Sheire. Michigan State answered with three-straight points for match point and after a kill by Sheire, closed out the match with a 25-21 set win.
