PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Cal Walsh netted his first-career goal in Brown men's soccer's 2-1 loss to Sacred Heart Wednesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears fall to 1-3-0 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 3-3-0.
"Another disappointing result tonight," said Chase Wileman, Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair. "We had 17 shots and scored one goal, they had three shots and scored two goals. things aren't going our way so we have to come out tomorrow and train, keep working and keep sticking together and no doubt things will turn our way."
Brown led the first half, 7-2, in shots and won the corner kick battle 2-0. The Pioneers picked up the most important stat, a goal, in the 21st minute when freshman Alex Almuzara sent home his first-career goal.
The Bears had five more shots to close the half, including two on goal in the 33rd and 34th minutes by freshmen Lorenzo Amaral and Carlo Brown.
Sacred Heart extended its lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute. Grad student Etienne Murugarrensent a long free kick to senior Olliver Persson who sent it home.
Brown then ramped up the intensity with five corner kicks and a shot on goal by junior Tanner Barry, but were unable to capitalize.
Another scoring opportunity came in the 79th minute. Senior Scott Gustafson and Amaral fired a flurry of close-range shots that all came up empty.
Walsh ended the shutout in the 88th minute off assists from junior Harri Sprofera and Carlo Brown to cut the Sacred Heart lead to 2-1. A corner kick in the closing seconds was headed away to finish the match.
"Congrats to Cal on his first-career goal," said Wileman. "Really happy for him. He works incredibly hard, so it was really good to see."
