Volleyball Starts Season with Sweeps of Le Moyne and Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (2-0) started the season with two sweeps, beating Le Moyne (0-4) and Rhode Island (0-4) on Friday night (Sept. 1).
The win over Le Moyne to start the day was the first-career win for Brown head coach Taylor Virtue.
"There is not a better way to start the year than two three-set wins," said Virtue. "I'm really proud and it was such a great team effort all the way through. Couldn't have gone better, we still have some work to do, but off to a good start."
The Bears were on fire on offense in both matches, hitting over .325 in each contest. The Bears finished the Le Moyne game with 42 kills and the URI match with 46.
Jilienne Widener led Brown with 12 kills against Le Moyne, followed by nine from Hannah Flannery. Beau Vanderlaan, Gabby Derrick and Kayla Griebl all had six kills. Flannery led Brown with a .667 hitting percentage.
Against the Rams, Vanderlaan led the team with 10 kills and hit .600. Griebl finished the night with nine kills and both Flannery and Widener had eight.
Cierra Jenkins guided the Brown offense with 33 assists in each match.
Brown's defense also made a statement, holding URI to .094 hitting and Le Moyne to .014 hitting. In the six sets Brown played, the most points Brown allowed was 19 and Brown allowed 15 points or less in four of the five other sets.
Jessie Golden led Brown in digs in both matches. The sophomore had 14 digs against Le Moyne ad 22 against the Rams.
At the net, Brown had seven blocks against URI and six against Le Moyne. Vanderlaan finished with five blocks and against Le Moyne and two against the Rams. Derrick had four blocks to lead the way against Rhode Island.
The service game was also a strong point for Brown as the Bears finished with 21 service aces between the two matches. Brown had 13 aces against Le Moyne, led by Widener with four and Victoria Vo with three. Jenkins had three of Brown's eight aces against URI and Widener added two.
