PRINCETON, N.J. – After a strong showing over the weekend, baseball's Mark Henshon has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Henshon made his first three career starts this weekend at second base against Cornell and posted at least one hit in all three games, going 5-for-9 with three runs scored and pair of walks.
He went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs in the series opener, 2-for-3 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, then 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Sunday's win.
He, along with the rest of the Bears' defense, played errorless ball and made several key defensive plays. His efforts at the plate and in the field were critical in Brown's first series sweep of the season.
Henshon is the second member of the Bears to win an Ivy weekly award this season, joining pitcher Carter Rasmussen who previously won Rookie of the Week on March 6.
The Bears landed two additional players on this week's honor roll in sophomore pitcher Santhosh Gottam and freshman DH Mika Petersen.
Petersen went 6-for-12 with three runs scored and two RBIs and a walk in the series. He singled and later came around to score Brown's only run in Saturday's 1-0 win. He now has an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base in 13 straight games. His weekend raised his season batting average 33 points to .325.
Gottam tossed a career-high seven-plus shutout innings and struck out a career-high eight batters without issuing a walk in Saturday's 1-0 win. It marks the first time in his career that he did not allow an earned run in an outing of at least 5.0 innings. His efforts highlighted a big weekend for Brown pitching, which struck out 37 batters to just 10 walks in their three-game sweep.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday afternoon at home in a non-league matchup against URI.
