PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 65 Brown women's tennis team opened Ivy League play with a 4-2 win over Yale Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears opened the match by claiming the doubles point thanks to wins by Addison Ahlstrom and Britany Lau as well as Phoebe Peus and Lindsey Hofflander.
Then, in singles, Ali Benedetto, Vivian Miller, and Olivia Mariotti won in straight sets to get to four team points and seal the overall victory.
"Today's match was a nail biter all the way until the end with momentum swings going back and forth between both teams," head coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "We were able to clinch the doubles point with aggressive play from Brit and Addie at line 1 and Phoebe and Lindsey at line 3. In singles, both Ali and Vivian were really clutch in important moments of their matches and handled pressure situations with great clarity, poise and fearlessness to win their respective matches.
"It seemed that we would be able to close out the match in the first four singles matches, but Yale battled back at line 5 singles to make the score 3-2 in our favor. At line 6, Olivia was the last match to go on the court for singles. She has been in the situation of being the last match on several times this year and she handled today's occasion with impressive courage. She played aggressively and confidently on the big points, defeating a high-caliber opponent to clinch the match.
"Today's win is a great conclusion to our spring break during which our players faced tough competition against Rice, University of Texas and Texas State. I felt our players were battle-tested and ready to rise to any challenge that would be presented to them, which is exactly what happened in today's win."
