Odenigbo Wins Pentathlon Title on Day One of Ivy League Heps

HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Chiamaka Odenigbo took home the first Ivy League title for the Brown track and field programs this weekend in the women's pentathlon on day one of the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Saturday. Odenigbo's title, along with freshman Adrienne Usher's third place finish, helped Brown's women's team take 16 points in the pentathlon.
The women's team also saw a runner-up performance from Lauren Yeboah-Kodie in the long jump, helping the Brown women accumulate 27 points on day one, sitting in third place overall after day one behind Harvard (49) and Princeton (45.5), and ahead of fourth place Columbia (10).
The men's side sees the Bears in fifth place with nine points after one day, all coming from a trio of long jumpers. Junior John McNeil took home the bronze in the long jump, tying his personal record in the event.
WOMEN
Odenigbo took home the gold with her first career Ivy League title by scoring 3,673 points in the pentathlon. She won the high jump (1.69m), took runner-up in the long jump (5.52m), finished third in both the 60 meter hurdles (8.99) and shot put (11.41m), and took ninth in the 800 meters (2:38.40).
Adrienne Usher also finished on the podium in third place of the pentathlon with a career-high 3,321 points. She highlighted the event with three personal records including 10.55 meters in the shot put, 2:37.05 in the 800 meters and a third place finish of 5.39m in the long jump.
Yeboah-Kodie's long jump 5.93 meters on her fifth attempt put her in second place overall to take home the silver and eight team points. Jada Joseph also scored a point for the Bears with her sixth place finish, following a leap of 5.67m.
Over in the throws, the Bears also earned two points from shot putter Kendra Ezeama who finished in fifth place overall, reaching 13.88 meters.
On the track, Brown runners qualified for Sunday's finals in several events with their preliminary round performances on Saturday. In the first round of the 60 meter hurdles, Brooke Ury finished third and Yeboah-Kodie took fifth to qualify for Sunday's finals, with Ury's time falling just 0.04 seconds shy of the school record mark she set last weekend. Yeboah-Kodie's mark was a new personal record by 0.04 seconds and ties her for fifth all-time on the school's top performers list.
Two more Brown athletes qualified for the 500 meter finals with freshman Jenna Lowrey (1:16.21) and senior Amy Willig (1:16.29) each setting PRs to put them in Sunday's finals.
MEN
McNeil took home the bronze in third place of the long jump, tying his personal record of 7.39 meters, No. 4 on the school's all-time top performers list. The Bears also picked up points from senior Altan Mitchell and freshman Sam Hurcomb, who finished in fifth and sixth, respectively after both leaping 7.14 meters.
Marcus Gillespie qualified for Sunday's finals in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.18 seconds, finishing the prelims in fourth. Junior Jack Kelley finished second in the first round of the 400 meters in 48.50 to advance to the finals.
Aaron Siff-Scherr placed fifth in the prelims of the 1,000 meters in 2:27.16, sending him to the finals.
