Strong Defense Leads Volleyball to Sweep at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Brown volleyball (16-6, 7-5) earned a huge road win in three sets over Dartmouth (8-13, 5-7) on Saturday night.
The Bears were led by Jilienne Widener and Mariia Sidorova with 13 kills each. Widener hit a team-high .423 on the night. Kate Sheire finished with seven kills and Beau Vanderlaan and Cierra Jenkins each had five. Jenkins also had 33 assists to guide the Bears offense.
Brown's defense held Dartmouth to .065 hitting, the lowest mark in the last eight matches for the Bears. The net defense was a big contributor for Brown as the Bears finished with 11 blocks on the night, the most in 10 matches. Gabby Derrick finished the night with seven blocks, while Vanderlaan and Widener each had four.
The Bears also finished with 63 digs on the night, the highest number this season in a three-set match. Jessie Golden led the team with 18 digs, followed by Victoria Vo with 14. Melie Vaioleti collected her first-career match with double-figure digs, picking up 10.
Early in the first set, Brown took control with a 6-0 run to go up 12-6. Dartmouth responded with a 7-1 run to pull back within two. With Brown leading 15-13, the Bears scored nine-straight points on a run that featured three service aces by Vo and two blocks by the duo of Vanderlaan and Jenkins. Sidorova finished off the set with a kill.
Brown used a 6-0 run to jump ahead 10-4 but Dartmouth climbed back into the set, tying the score at 15. With the score tied at 16, Brown used a 4-0 run to get to 20 points. The Big Green kept in the set with a 3-0 run as Brown led 23-22 but a block by Derrick and a Dartmouth error put the Bears up 2-0.
Another big run, this one 9-1, put Brown up 11-4 to start set three. Up four at 14-10, Brown went on a 7-1 run that featured three kills by Sidorova to jump ahead by 10. Two kills by Widener and kills from Jenkins, Sidorova and Sheire closed out the match.

Brown will return home for its final weekend of the regular season with matches against Cornell (Friday) and Columbia (Saturday).
