Volleyball Takes Down Princeton to Earn Spot in Ivy Final

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown volleyball clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament final with a four-set win over Princeton on Friday night. (Nov. 17). It's the second-straight season Brown has earned a spot in the final by taking down the Tigers.
Jilienne Widener had a stellar night for the Bears, leading the way with season-high 15 kills and led Brown with five blocks. Beau Vanderlaan followed with 14 kills and Kate Sheire had 13. The offense went through Cierra Jenkins who tallied 44 assists and put the Bears' attackers in great position throughout the match.
On defense, Brown finished the night with 63 digs, tied for the third-highest total of the season. Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year Jessie Golden led Brown with 21 digs, followed by 14 for Melie Vaioleti and 10 from Mariia Sidorova. Behind Widener at the net, Vanderlaan finished the match with four blocks and Gabby Derrick had three.
Princeton jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set but Brown responded winning six of the next seven points to tie the set at 11. Down 15-14, Brown picked up a kill by Vanderlaan and an ace by Sidorova to go ahead two. The Bears rattled off three more points with kills by Widener and Jenkins and a block by the duo of Derrick and Widener. Up 20-18 Brown scored the final five points with two Widener kills bookending the run for the Bears.
Brown's offense cooled as the Bears hit just .023 in the second set and Princeton hit .342 to tie the match 1-1.
The Bears responded in set three, hitting .440 and holding Princeton to just .037 hitting. After Princeton took a 9-6 lead, kills by Shiere and another Sidorova ace tied the set. Brown then took control with a 9-1 run capped by three kills from Vanderlaan to lead 18-11. A late 4-0 run from Brown gave the Bears a 25-13 set three win.
Brown found Sheire for three-striaght kills and Widener capped a 6-0 run that put Brown up 10-5 in the third. The Bears seemed to have an answer for any run Princeton tried to make and used a 6-0 run that featured two kills each from Sheire, Vanderlaan and Kayla Griebl to go up 20-11. Brown earned set point after an error and a block by the duo of Derrick and Widener sent the Bears to the Ivy Final.

Brown will face off against the winner of Yale and Harvard in the Ivy League Tournament Final on Saturday at 7 p.m.
