
Volleyball Falls in Four Sets in Ivy Final

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown volleyball fought but came up short of an Ivy League title, losing to Yale in four sets on Saturday night. Both Cierra Jenkins and Beau Vanderlaan were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
Brown was led by 11 kills from Jilienne Widener and 10 kills from Vanderlaan, who hit .308 on the night. Both Kate Sheire and Mariia Sidorova finished the night with eight kills. Jenkins guided Brown's offense with 37 assists and collected 14 digs for a double-double.
Jessie Golden led Brown's defense with 27 digs. At the net, Shiere finished the night with five blocks and Gabby Derrick added three.
The Bears took an early 10-5 lead in the first set with a 5-0 run that featured a block by Sheire and a kill by Derrick. Brown maintained its lead, going up 16-12 after a kill by Jenkins and a Yale error. A 4-0 Yale run tied the set and forced a timeout by the Bears. Yale took the lead 20-17 but a kill by Sheire and block by the duo of Sheire and Derrick again knotted the set at 20. Yale held a 23-21 lead before Brown picked up a point but the Bulldogs scored the next two to take the set.
The teams traded early leads in the second set with Brown earning a 14-12 lead after a block by Griebl and Vanderlaan. Tied at 16, Yale used a 3-0 run to jump ahead but kills by Widener and Sheire pulled Brown within one at 20-19. Kills by Griebl and Sheire tied the set at 21 but the Bulldogs responded with three-straight points to earn set point. Sheire and Griebl again got Brown within one but a kill on the next point earned Yale a 2-0 match lead.
Needing a win to stay alive in the match, Brown responded taking a 7-2 lead after an ace by Melie Vaioleti. Yale pulled back within two twice, but Brown responded with kills from Derrick and Vanderlaan. After the Bulldogs made it 13-11, a kill and block by Vanderlaan and an ace by Sidorova put the Bears up 17-11. A block by Sheire and Derrick put Brown up 21-14 but Yale scored five-straight to make it 21-19. Up 23-21, Brown picked up kills by Sidorova and Vanderlaan to force a fourth set.
Brown scored the first four points in the fourth set and led 15-13 after a kill by Sidorova. A three-point run that was capped by a kill from Vanderlaan put Brown up 19-17 and forced a Yale timeout. After the timeout, it was all Yale as the Bulldogs scored the next eight points to win the match.
