Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night With Sweep of Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball closed out its regular season celebrating its five seniors with a sweep over Columbia, 25-12, 25-15, 25-18.

Prior to the match, Brown honored the careers of Ada Agolli, Kate Danaher, Cierra Jenkins, Kate Sheire and Jilienne Widener.

The Bears finished the night hitting .351 and got better each set, hitting .313 in the first, .342 in the second and .407 in the third. Brown held Columbia to a .133 hitting percentage.

Mariia Sidorova led Brown with 12 kills and was one of seven Bears to hit over .300 in the match. Beau Vanderlaan finished the night with nine kills, hitting .444. Sheire had eight kills and Widener finished with seven. The offense was guided by Jenkins who finished the night with 25 assists.

On defense, Brown finished the night with nine blocks, led by Vanderlaan's six and Jenkins four. Jessie Golden had a team-high 22 digs and Sidorova finished with eight.

Sidorova finished the night with a career-high five aces, as the Bears had nine services aces as a team.

Once the match started, Brown was in full control. The Bears started the match on a 12-2 run and after a 6-0 run the Bears held an 18-3 lead. Columbia tried to climb back into the match, pulling within 10 at 21-11 but Brown closed out the set with four of the next five points, ending with a kill by Vanderlaan.

Brown again started hot in the second, going up 7-3 after a kill by Sidorova. Up one after a run by the Lions, the Bears rolled off six of the next seven points to take control of the set. A 3-0 run with kills by Jenkins, Derrick and Widener put Brown up 22-14. The Bears finished off the set with a block by Derrick and Sheire, and back-to-back kills by Sidorova and Danaher.

Up one, at 6-5, Brown used three-straight kills by Vanderlaan to spark a 10-1 run that finished with a hat trick of service aces from Sidorova. Columbia went on a run to climb back into the set at 21-17 but Brown got a block by Vanderlaan and Jenkins and a kill by Sidorova to earn match point. After a kill by the Lions, an attack error ended the match.

UP NEXT
Brown will be the No. 3 seed in the Ivy League Tournament in New Haven, Conn. The Bears will face the No. 2 seed Princeton on Friday (Nov. 17) at 4 p.m.
