PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Brittany Raphino made history on Wednesday as the first player in Ivy League history to three-peat as Offensive Player of the Year. Head Coach Kia McNeill was voted as the Coach of the Year, and seven others earned All-Ivy recognition after Brown completed its fourth-straight Ivy Championship and undefeated season in conference play.
Raphino takes her spot on the first team as a unanimous selection for the fourth consecutive year. Joining her on the first team is senior Jessica Hinton. Making appearances on the second team are seniors Sheyenne Allen and Ava Seelenfreund, while seniors Clare Gagne and Kira Maguire, sophomore Layla Shell, and freshman Joy Okonye were named Honorable Mention.
From Randolph, Mass., Raphino is the first player in Ivy League history to win a major award in all four years, winning three Offensive Player of the Year awards and the Rookie of the Year. She finished the regular season tying her career high with 11 goals and six assists, and led the conference with 2.00 points per game. Raphino is Brown's fifth four-time first team selection and first since Suzanne Bailey did so (1987-90). She is the first in the Ivy League to accomplish the feat since Harvard's Midge Purce (2013-16). She received unanimous Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second time in her illustrious career (2021). She received Ivy Offensive Player of the Week recognition three times this season and is ranked No. 14 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's National College Soccer Player Rankings.
After managing Brown to an undefeated conference season, an 11-1-2 overall record, and the 2023 Ivy League regular season title, McNeill was named the 2023 Coach of the Year. Brown enters the weekend with the No. 14 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and the number five ranking in the RPI.
A defender from Middletown, Conn., Hinton claimed a spot on the first team after a sensational season on the Bears back line. Hinton helped Brown to the top defense in the Ivy League as the team allowed only four goals in conference play and nine throughout the entire season, which ranks tenth in the nation. Hinton played all 90 minutes for the Bears in six out of the seven conference matches.
Selected to the second team, Allen finished the regular season with three goals and five assists for 11 points, which is second most on the team. A difference maker on both ends of the field, Allen was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25 and was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 30.
Another four-time All-Ivy selection, Seelenfreund was tabbed to the second team. From Truckee, Calif., Seelenfreund tallied one goal and four assists on the year for six points. She scored and assisted at home against Penn (Oct. 7) and picked up assists against UAlbany (Aug. 25), at Columbia (Oct. 14) and at Cornell (Oct. 21). Seelenfreund was also a second team selection in 2019.
All four Bears who were named Honorable Mention are making their first appearances on All-League teams.
From Orono, Minn., Gagne finished the regular season with a 9-1-2 record in net, a .483 goals against average for second in the league, a .846 save percentage for third in the conference, and was third in Ivy League with six shutouts. Gagne posted shutouts against UC San Diego (Sept. 3), Portland (Sept. 14), URI (Sept. 17), Harvard (Sept. 23), Columbia (Oct. 14) and Dartmouth (Oct. 28).
Maguire saw action in 14 games and started 11. From Hingham, Mass., Maguire found the back of the net three times against UAlbany (Aug. 25), at Central Connecticut State (Aug. 27) and at Yale (Oct. 4). Her goal at CCSU was the game-winner.
Making an immediate impact as a transfer from the University of Tennessee, Shell has been a vital member of the defense for the Bears. She started the season with two goals against UAlbany, and received Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week following opening weekend.
Earning Honorable Mention as a freshman, Okonye led the Ivy League with eight assists and added one goal for 10 points. Okonye tallied two assists in three matches against UAlbany (Aug. 25), UC San Diego (Sept. 3) and Princeton (Sept. 30).
Senior Evelyn Calhoon was named to the Academic All-Ivy League team.
The Bears are set to host the Ivy League Tournament beginning on Friday when they take on Columbia at 5 p.m.
