Volleyball Sweeps Penn Behind Strong Offensive Showing

PHILADELPHIA – Brown volleyball earned a three-set sweep over Penn on Friday as the Bears' offense had another strong outing.
Jilienne Widener and Mariia Sidorova each had 12 kills to lead the team and both players hit .333. Beau Vanderlaan finished the night with seven kills, hitting .462. Both Kate Sheire and Cierra Jenkins had six kills and Jenkins finished the night hitting .357. Jenkins guided Brown's offense with 29 assists and helped Brown hit .294 on the night.
On defense, Jessie Golden led Brown with 24 digs and Jenkins finished with 15. Both Gabby Derrick and Sheire had a team-high two blocks. After allowing Penn to hit .361 in the first set, Brown held the Quakers to .175 in the second and .086 in the third.
Brown held an early two-point lead at 8-6 before Widener added three kills as Brown used a 5-1 run to go up 13-7. A kill by Jenkins put Brown up 20-13 before four-straight points from the Quakers. Sidorova had two kills as Brown closed out the first set 25-20.
Penn took an early lead and held on to the advantage, going up 18-15 after a kill. Brown climbed back with three kills by Widener and an ace by Jenkins to go up 20-18. The teams traded points until a kill by Vanderlaan and back-to-back kills by Sidorova gave Brown a 25-21 set win.
After two close sets, Brown took over in the third. With Kayla Griebl on the service line, Brown rattled off nine-straight points to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The Bears pushed the lead to 19-6 with kills coming from Widener and Jenkins. Sidorova and Vanderlaan finished off the match for the Bears at 25-12.
UP NEXT
The Bears will head to Princeton on Saturday for a matchup against the Tigers beginning at 5 p.m.
