Volleyball Earns Fifth-Straight Win With Sweep Over Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (14-3, 5-2 Ivy) earned its fifth-straight win as the Bears beat Harvard (11-5, 4-3) in straight sets, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
Brown out hit Harvard .291 to .116 and the Bears held a big advantage in kills (44-27) and blocks (8-3).
Beau Vanderlaan finished with a team-high 13 kills while Kate Sheire had nine and Jilienne Widener had eight. Vanderlaan finished the match hitting .600 to lead Brown.
Cierra Jenkins once again guided the offense with 32 assists and added five kills while hitting .500.
On defense, Jessie Golden led Brown with 14 digs and Victoria Vo had 12. At the net, Vanderlaan finished the night six blocks and Kayla Griebl had four.
Harvard came into the match as the top team in the Ivy League in service aces but Brown was strong on the return game, only surrendering five aces while collecting nine of their own. Vo once again had four service aces, while Mariia Sidorova added three.
Brown trailed 11-9 before a kill from Widener and three aces by Vo gave Brown a 13-11 lead. Brown used another 4-0 run to take control of the set at 17-12. Harvard pulled to within three at 22-18 but Vanderlaan had two kills and teamed with Jenkins for a block to end the set.
The Bears got on a run during Sidorova's serve in the second set, going from down 6-5 to up 13-6. The run featured three kills by Vanderlaan and two service aces. Harvard climbed back, pulling within one multiple times but Brown never let the Crimson tie the match going ahead 19-16 after an error. Brown would take six of the final eight points of the set to go up 2-0 in the match.
A 4-0 run early put Brown ahead 11-4. The Bears held Harvard at bay using another 4-0 run to go head 18-9. Harvard pulled within five after a 4-0 run but the two teams traded points until Brown earned the last two on two Crimson errors to take the match.

Brown will start the second half of the Ivy League schedule with a home contest against Yale on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
