CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Brown gymnastics team turned in a strong all-around performance, posting a score of 193.625 on Saturday in a quad meet at Oregon State. The Bears' score was over two full points higher than the 191.225 posted in last weekend's season opener.
Overall, host Oregon State, who entered the weekend ranked No. 18 nationally, won the meet with a score of 197.200, followed by No. 8 Denver at 196.725. Brown took third place, followed by Sacramento State at 192.400.
The Bears scored 48.725 on vault, and season-highs of 48.375 on bars, 48.075 on beam and 48.450 on floor.
"Overall, I think they handled being in Gil Coliseum really well," said head coach Brittany Harris, who was coaching against her alma mater for the first time. "We were competing with 5,000-plus fans there. When they're cheering and throwing up big scores it gets incredibly loud and electric, and that can sometimes intensify your nerves and jitters, but they went out there and did their thing and had fun along the way. They enjoyed the moment and soaked it all in, and we ended up scoring over two-and-a-half points higher than last week and we still have a lot to work on, so that's really exciting for this team."
Brown was led by senior Abby Contello on vault and bars, junior Angela Xing on beam and sophomore Julia Bedell on floor.
Starting off the meet on beam, Xing led the Bears with a score of 9.800, followed by freshman Liza Marcus at 9.675, helping Brown total 48.075 for a new season-high.
On floor, Bedell tied for sixth overall to lead Brown at 9.825. Freshman Sophia Dewar and senior Carolanne Van Zandt were Brown's next highest scorers at 9.700.
Next up on vault, Contello (9.825) and freshman Umi El Mammann (9.750) both set new career-highs to pace the team. Xing and Bedell both scored 9.725 and Dewar posted a 9.700.
Rounding out the meet on bars, Contello once again led the way for Brown with a score of 9.800, followed by junior Asta-Sollilja Farrell at 9.750, senior Lauren Lazaro at 9.725, and senior Ella Poley at 9.700.
"Overall, we're doing what we do in practice," Harris said. "We're practicing how we want to compete, so we then compete how we practice. I wanted them to have fun and enjoy it, and it was nice to get that experience with the first two meets being away. Now we get to come home for three weekends in front of our home crowd in our hometown."
The Bears will return east to host their home opener in their next meet on Sunday, January 29 with a quad meet against Southern Connecticut State, Bridgeport and RIC. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Pizzitola Sports Center and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
