Volleyball sweeps Cornell on Friday

ITHACA, N.Y. – Behind a strong offensive performance, Brown (5-6, 1-1 Ivy) beat Cornell (3-8, 1-1 Ivy) 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) on Friday night. Two Bears finished the game with double-digit kills in the victory.
Brown hit .406 as a team in the win, including hitting .455 in the first set. It was the highest hitting percentage for the team since hitting .413 against Dartmouth last season on Nov. 13.
Sophia Miller led the Bears with 12 kills and hit .333. Miller also added seven digs. Kate Sheire had 11 kills and hit a career-best .688. Beau Vanderlaan was third on the team with nine kills, hitting .421.
The offense was guided by Cierra Jenkins, who finished with 38 assists, nine digs and five kills, while hitting .375.
On defense, Victoria Vo led Brown with 11 digs and Jessie Golden was tied with Jenkins with nine. Vanderlaan led Brown with five blocks, including three solo. Both Sheire and Gabby Derrick each had two blocks. Brown outblocked Cornell 11-3.
Up three midway through the first set, a kill by Jenkins and two errors from Cornell pushed Brown's lead to six. Later in the set, a kill by Sheire and two by Kayla Griebl helped keep the lead at six points. Brown finished the set with a kill by Griebl and two kills and a block from Vanderlaan.
Tied at 10 in the second set, Brown jumped ahead with kills by Sheire, Griebl and Jenkins. A block by Vanderlaan and Griebl and a solo block by Vanderlaan ended the 5-0 for Brown. Cornell pulled within two but Sheire added two kills to push the lead back to four. A service ace by Golden put Brown up 23-18. Miller added two kills to end the set for Brown.
Brown jumped ahead 4-0 early in the third set and back-to-back kills by Miller put Brown up 10-5. The Bears held Cornell at bay throughout the set until a kill by Vanderlaan gave Brown match point. After a point from the Big Red, Jenkins finished the match with a kill.

Brown will finish the road trip with a match against Columbia on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 5 p.m.
