Volleyball sweeps past Columbia

NEW YORK – Brown volleyball picked up another straight-set win beating Columbia 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-15) on Saturday. The Bears had three players finish with double-figure kills in the win.
Kayla Griebl led Brown (6-6, 2-1 Ivy) with a season-high 13 kills and hit. .310. Beau Vanderlaan had 11 kills, hitting .450 and Kate Sheire finished with 10 kills, hitting .625. It is the second-straight game that Sheire has hit over .600. Sophia Miller was just shy of double-figures with nine kills.
The offense ran through Cierra Jenkins, who finished the game with 38 assists.
Brown's net defense had a big advantage finished with 13 blocks to just two for Columbia (3-9, 0-3 Ivy). Sheire had seven blocks and Gabby Derrick finished with six blocks. On the backline, Victoria Vo had a team-high 19 digs.
The Bears set the tone early with a 4-0 run that featured a kill by Vanderlaan and block by Vanderlaan and Jenkins to go up 8-4. An ace by Vo later in the set made the score 15-10 in favor of Brown. Columbia pulled within one on multiple occasions during the set but Brown always responded, including a 3-0 run to push Brown's advantage back to 20-16. The Bears won the set with kills by Griebl and Sheire.
Brown went up 14-12 in the second but Columbia jumped ahead with a 6-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Bears would trim the lead to one twice before the Lions scored two-straight points to earn set point at 24-20. Facing four-straight set points, Brown battled back, beginning with a kill by Griebl. A block by Sheire and Vanderlaan and kill by Vanderlaan made the score 24-23. Back-to-back kills by Griebl gave Brown set point and Vanderlaan capped a 6-0 run to put Brown up 2-0 in the match.
A quick 6-0 run to start set three put Brown up 8-3 and the lead hit six points after a kill from Griebl. The teams traded multiple three-point runs with the Bears going up 18-12 after a block by Sheire and Derrick. Up 19-14, Brown took control of the set with a 5-0 run that featured three-straight kills from Griebl to earn match point. After a Columbia point, Sheire ended the match with a kill.

Brown will stay on the road next weekend as Ivy play continues with matches at Dartmouth and Harvard.
