PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three graduating Brown student-athletes were recognized by the University on Friday afternoon with the prestigious Joukowsky Scholar-Athlete Award and the Alfred H. Joslin Award. The awards were presented at a ceremony and reception at the De Ciccio Family Auditorium at the Salomon Center for Teaching.
Field hockey's Amanda Cooper was one of 10 students university-wide that was presented with the prestigious Alfred H. Joslin Award, given on behalf of the Division of Campus Life and Student Services. The award is presented to a small group of seniors who have significantly contributed to the quality of student life at Brown. Cooper, who will graduate this weekend with a degree in sociology, was elected co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She fought hard to implement a mandatory sexual assault prevention module for all student-athletes at Brown, served as a student representative on Brown's Culture of Respect Campus Leadership Team, and sat on the Brown Campus Life Subcommittee on Athletics and Physical Education. Additionally, she volunteered as a mentor in the Matched Advising Program for Sophomores and re-founded a student-athlete a cappella group called Jockapella.
Gymnastics senior Mei Li Costa was one of two winners of the Joukowsky Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented annually to two Brown students who embody the best qualities of the scholar-athlete by achieving success both in the classroom and in competition. Costa is a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier and a four-time Ivy Classic title winner. Earlier this year, she set a new school record of 9.975 on bars, and received the program's first ever perfect-10 from one of the judges. Costa will graduate with a degree in educational studies, and has worked as an undergrad as a curriculum development assistant, helping to develop a comprehensive culturally sustaining curriculum for the language arts. She has also served as a teaching fellow at Generation Teach, leading critical thinking-focused law classes for sixth graders.
The male Joukowsky Award recipient this year was Derek Waleffe from men's soccer. A Third Team All-Northeast Region and First Team All-Ivy honoree this past season, the senior captain led Brown with eight goals and 17 points. He was recognized as a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American this past fall, and is also a two-time Academic All-Ivy honoree. Concentrating in physics, Waleffe is a member of the Low Dimensional Electronics Lab at Brown. During the summer, he participated in the Soccer Unites Against Hunger food drive, donating to local food banks. He has also volunteered with Project GOAL and has represented men's soccer on Brown's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
