Brown Qualifies for USAG Finals with Third-Highest Score in Program History

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's gymnastics team posted the highest score in the prelims of the USA Gymnastics National Championships on Friday evening, qualifying for Saturday night's finals and a chance to compete for a national title.
Brown finished with a team score of 194.925, the third-highest mark in program history. In addition, four gymnasts qualified for the individual finals, which will take place on Sunday afternoon by virtue of finishing in the top five in their respective events in the evening session. Freshman Julia Bedell qualified after taking third on vault, senior Mei Li Costa qualified after winning on the uneven bars, Taylor Schulze won on beam, and Angela Xing took bronze on beam to qualify for Sunday's finals.
Joining Brown in Saturday's finals will be Texas Woman's University, who took second place in the second session behind Brown with 194.700 points. Air Force (194.550) and Lindenwood (193.800) both qualified for the finals from session one.
Starting off the night on floor, Brown posted a score of 48.625, led by Bedell, who tied for seventh overall at 9.800. Xing followed at 9.775, with Lauren Lazaro posting a 9.750, and Lauren Kramer tying her career high at 9.700.
Moving to vault, Brown totaled 48.825, the highest of any team on the event. Once again, Bedell led the Bears by tying her career-high at 9.825, good enough for third place overall. Costa and Xing tied for sixth overall at 9.775, followed by Ella Poley and Alyssa Gardner, who each scored 9.725.
Costa led the way with a huge 9.925 performance on bars to take home first place on the event. Schulze and Poley followed by each scoring 9.750, with Paige Richter scoring 9.600. In total, Brown posted a 48.600 score on bars.
The Bears saved their best for last on beam, netting their highest score of the season on the event at 48.875, and just narrowly falling short of the school record mark of 48.900. Schulze led the way by taking gold with a big personal record mark of 9.900. Xing joined her on the podium with a third place mark of 9.850, tying her career-high, and qualifying both for Sunday's individual final. Next for Brown was McKenna Weiner (9.725), Addie Liebhardt (9.700) and Abby Contello (9.700), all of whom tied their career-highs.
Saturday's team finals are set to get underway at 6:55 p.m. from the campus of Cornell University. A livestream of the event will be broadcast live on FlipNow. Due to technical difficulties on the Cornell campus, live results will not be publicly available.
