PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball celebrated senior Ashley Ducharme before the game against Yale on Saturday (March 5). The Bears fell to the Bulldogs in a close battle to close out the season.
Kyla Jones led the Bears with 17 points and four steals. Ducharme finished the game second on the team with 10 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Isabella Mauricio finished with nine points, hitting a three in the fourth quarter to run her streak of games with a made three to 21.
"How much time do you have to talk about Ashley's contributions," said Monique LeBlanc, Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball. "I came in during the pandemic and Ashley and the two seniors at the time made us feel extremely welcome. Yesterday was her last practice and Ashley was there to put the balls away and pick up the tape off the court. That is the type of leader that she is."
After being recognized on her senior day, Ducharme scored the first basket of the game on a nice cut and pass by Mauricio, who finished with a team-high six assists. Another layup by Ducharme cut Yale's lead to three after the Bulldogs went on a run. Down seven, Brown got back-to-back layups by Jones to make it a three-point game.
Mauricio scored Brown's first four points of the second quarter as the Bears continued to hang around. After a free throw by Jones made it a four-point game, Yale used an 8-0 run to push its lead to 12. Another late free throw by Jones made it a seven-point game at the half.
Yale's lead reached 22 at one point in the third quarter but the Bears did not quit fighting. Jones made a layup and a three-point play by Gianna Aiello made the score 44-28. Maddie Mullin beat the buzzer with a three to end the quarter, putting the Bears down 15 with one quarter left to play.
Down 19, Brown started a run with a tough layup in the paint by Jones. After a steal by Dani Short, Mullin hit her second three of the game to force a timeout by Yale. Ducharme then hit a three and scored on a layup after a steal by Mauricio, cutting the deficit to 11. With four minutes left in the game, Brown cut Yale's lead to eight with a three by Mauricio but the Bulldogs put a stop to the run allowing Brown just one point the rest of the game.
"I think we played pretty good defense the whole way through, but at times we just struggled to make some baskets," said LeBlanc. "We were forcing them to take tough shots but they were just able to make some of them. What I like is that we didn't let that affect our energy and our approach throughout the game."
Yale was led by Camilla Emsbo who scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.
