Gainey Posts Monster Game, Bears Fall in Season Finale at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In his final game as a Brown Bear, senior Jaylan Gainey posted a career night with 20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, but Brown fell by a score of 74-65 at Yale on Saturday evening in the season finale.
The Bears shot 53.1 percent from the floor, their third-highest shooting percentage of the season, despite going just 1-for-15 from three-point range. Brown outscored Yale 40-32 in the paint, while Yale outrebounded Brown 37-31, including 13-5 on the offensive glass and holding a 12-10 edge in second chance points.
For Gainey, who went 9-for-11 from the field, Saturday marked the second straight game and second time in his career he topped the 20-point mark, while his 18 boards blew past his previous career-high of 13, which he accomplished twice earlier this season. He also posted two assists and two blocks in the game.
Grad student Tamenang Choh put up 13 points and seven rebounds to go with two assists for Brown. Choh concludes his Brown career 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1,322 career points, and sixth all-time with 856 rebounds.
Aaron Cooley scored 13 points for Brown on 6-of-7 from the field, and Kino Lilly Jr. was the fourth Bear to score in double figures with 10 points and four assists.
After a back-and forth start to the game, Yale used a 7-0 run to go up 15-6 at the first media timeout at the 14:18 mark. They extended the lead with an 8-0 run made it 34-19 at the 3:43 mark as Brown was held scoreless for over three minutes.
The Bears then turned it on, going on an 8-0 run, as part of scoring 10 of the last 12 points of the half to pull back within 39-31 at halftime. Four different scorers had field goals as part of the run, including jumpers by Cooley and Lilly, and a dunk from Gainey and a layup from Choh in the closing seconds.
Brown used a 5-0 run early in the second half to pull within five thanks to a jumper from Choh just over two minutes in. Yale countered with a 9-2 run of their own to push the lead to 52-40, prompting a timeout at the 15:52 mark.
After Yale built a game-high 17-point lead with 4:34 to play, but Brown responded with another push to score eight unanswered after the final media timeout and pull within 70-61 with 2:23 to go. Cooley put in a layup in transition with 27 seconds to go to pull within eight, but that was a close as the Bears would get.
Brown finishes the season with a 13-16 overall record and a 5-9 mark in Ivy play.
