Men's basketball falls just short at home against Penn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A three by Kino Lilly Jr. gave the Brown men's basketball team a one-point lead with five seconds remaining, but Penn would convert on the game-winner four seconds later to defeat the Bears 89-88 Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Jaylan Gainey set the screen and Tamenang Choh found Lilly for his career-high ninth assist as the freshman drained the long-range shot for his team-high 20th point of the night. Had it not been for the Quakers' Clark Slajchert's floater in the lane with .4 seconds on the clock, Lilly's three would have been the shot of the season.
"That was a great college basketball game," head coach Mike Martin said. "Both teams continued to make winning plays throughout, especially down the stretch. I loved the way we played tonight. Their offense was great. I don't think our defense was awful, it just wasn't quite good enough.
"Steve Donahue is a great coach and a better friend. He and his team deserve all the credit, but my players deserve a ton too. I feel for my players."
Lilly's 20 points paced Brown. Dan Friday had one of his best nights of the season with 19 points and six rebounds. Tamenang Choh had 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Kimo Ferrari tied his career-high of 12 points and at one point was 4-for-4 from three.
The Bears led by as many as 13 in the first half. A layup by Jaylan Gainey with 1:12 in the opening frame pushed the lead to 13, but Penn would end the half with six straight to cut the halftime deficit to seven at 46-39.
Brown went back up by ten to open the second after David Mitchell made it 55-45 at the 15:37 mark, but over the next four minutes the Quakers went on a 20-3 run to retake the lead. Penn led 65-58 with 11:52 to play.
Down the stretch, as Coach Martin mentioned, the Bears made the plays they needed to keep the game within reach. Down nine with 4:42 to go, Brown outscored Penn 13-6 to cut the Quaker lead to 87-85 with 32 seconds to play.
After the Bears forced Penn into a turnover, Lilly hit his three to take the lead, followed by Slajchert's bucket for the win.
Brown will pay its final home game of the season next Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. against Columbia.
