
Volleyball sweeps Princeton to punch ticket to Ivy League Finals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball swept its way to the Ivy League Tournament finals in dramatic fashion, beating Princeton, 25-18, 28-26, 30-28 on Friday night.
The Bears were led by Sophia Miller with 13 kills and Kayla Griebl with 12 kills. Kate Sheire was third on the team with eight kills. The offense went through both Kate Danaher (19 assists) and Ella Park (16 assists). Brown hit .233 against the second-best defense in the Ivy League, a Princeton team that held opponents to .171 hitting on the year.
Brown's defense also shut down the second-best hitting offense in the league. Princeton came into the game hitting .274 but the Bears held the Tigers to .159 hitting and forced 26 errors. Both Gabby Derrick and Kate Sheire had six blocks. Jessie Golden led the way on the backline with 19 digs and Victoria Vo had 11.
The Bears dominated the first set, hitting .297 and holding Princeton to a .103 hitting percentage. Brown opened up the game on a 7-0 run that featured two blocks by Derrick and Shiere. Two more blocks by the duo gave Brown a 22-15 lead. The Bears went up 23-18 after an error and kills from Derrick and Griebl gave the Bears the set.
Set two was back-and-forth until a run by Princeton put the Tigers up 10-6. Later in the set, a service ace made the score 16-10 in favor of Princeton and forced Brown's second timeout. The Bears started to inch their way back into the set eventually pulling within one at 23-22 after kills by Griebl and Miller. After Princeton earned set point, Brown fought off two points to tie the set 24-24.
Princeton earned two more set points but the Bears fought off each one, tying the set at 26. Brown earned its own set point after a kill by Sheire and error by Princeton. The Bears took advantage of their set point with a kill by Griebl to go up 2-0.
Brown jumped ahaead 6-3 in set three after a kill by Sheire but Princeton eventually took a 13-10 lead. The Bears continued to battle in the set, tying the set at 18 after an ace by Paris Winkler. The set continued back-and-forth with Brown earning match point at 24-23. Princeton scored the next two points to earn their own match point and it looked as though Princeton had forced a fourth set as Griebl's attack was out. Head Coach Ahen Kim challenged the no-touch and the play was reversed after it was ruled Princeton touched the ball.
A block by Beau Vanderlaan and Park gave Brown another match point but it was Princeton's turn to score two-straight and earn match point at 27-26. The Bears took a 28-27 lead with an error and kill by Miller but Princeton fought off Brown's third match point of the night. Tied at 28, Brown scored the next two points on two Princeton errors to punch its ticket to the finals.

Brown will play in the 2022 Ivy League Tournament Championship on Saturday at 6 p.m. between the winner of Yale and Dartmouth.
